my local: science to art

a thirty mile or so radius, drawn around the state of ohio's capital building in downtown columbus, defines my local.  potential clients for my art must live within this area (encompassing most of the greater columbus metropolitan area).  if you are viewing my local pages for more than curiousity, then you likely are here as the result of word-of-mouth.

my professional work is firmly based in science.  closer to home, however, in my local practice, my work manifests as much in art as it does in science. art is the personal manifestation of ideas, feelings, and an acceptance of a nonverbal recognition or connection to the work.  that manifestation is dependent upon the skill of the artist and the artist's knowledge of the physical properties of the working media.  it is always personal.

in the making of anything, perfection is unobtainable.  perfection has always been reserved for the gods and not we mere mortals.  as in all artistic endeavors, where the subjective plays a role, it is this complex balancing of different domains of thought and skill that transcends imperfection and takes the everyday to art.

the art of loudspeaker designing is also an art that aids the art of others.  Loudspeakers are not built for their own sake.  they are built for the reproduction of the art of others.  they are the means by which we are able to experience music when the musicians are separated from us by both distance and time.

this makes the art of loudspeakers a more subtle art than most other artistic endeavors.  yet getting it right is just as important as in any other form.  and it is as difficult as any other form of art.  when loudspeaker is not subtle, when it interposes itself between the listener and the music, then loudspeaker construction is not an art.

when the loudspeaker is artistically proper, then its sound is the sound of the musical artists recording.  with each musical artist, the sound that the listener should be different.  when the loudspeaker is itself an acoustically artistic work, then it is easy to percieve and appreciate the depth and nuances of recordings.  by this the experience of the recording is enhanced, and enhancement that is profound, imposing no limits of its own.

i do understand the desire to produce work that is less subtle.  for art that imposes i choose to follow a more visual line of work.  here the art is the visual experience of the loudspeaker and not the sonic one.  it is also a way of making each loudspeaker unique and paradoxically both more and less visible within our homes.  i invite you to explore the galleries.
